Long before your first roll call alarm goes off, the robins are already searching for breakfast. Listen for their bright, rolling song often described as a “cheerily cheer up cheer up!” Hopping along the ground with a cock in their head and a wide gait, these birds are on the prowl for the first worm of the morning.
While most people know that Robins eat worms, their diets consist of many different insects and arachnids. In the woods near the Cranbrook House and Gardens, spiders, ants, grass hoppers, caterpillars, grubs, moths, and snails are all on the menu! In the winter, their diet consists of berries and other small growing fruit. This robin in the Japanese Gardens managed to catch a small meal before noon!
