Walk around Kingswood Lake enough and you’re bound to see these ancient looking birds fishing along the coast. With slender frames, scaly legs, and mannerisms that make them look more like something you’d see in a dinosaur documentary, great blue herons are a blast from the past. Juveniles often stick toward the stream running near the back of the Girls MS while they’re learning the ropes, and adults can be seen sun bathing on Kingswood Lakes various islands.
Great blue herons have special chest feathers, called “powder down”, that they use as a wash cloth to clean off fish slime, oil, and mud when preening. These feathers can look quite elaborate while they hunt, fluffing up and sticking out in every which direction.
