At the base of trees, in the grass, under gutters, and almost everywhere you look on campus you can spot the eastern chipmunk. Skittish, fast, and iconically known for their filled out cheek pouches, chipmunks are adorable little native rodents. Unbeknownst to many, chipmunks are actually a small species of squirrel, exhibiting many of the same behaviors as their larger counterparts.
Chipmunks hibernate all winter, meaning they have to store lots of food. In a single day, a chipmunk can gather up to 165 acorns, more than enough to last an entire winter, but they often gather much more than they need. By doing this, some of their caches are bound to be forgotten, leading to new seeds and trees being planted for the spring.
