A little larger than the spotted sandpiper, found alone quietly traversing Kingswood Lakes banks with distinct white speckling, is the solitary sandpiper. These birds, unlike many sandpiper species, do not flock and prefer to be alone, garnering their nickname “the loner”. On campus in the spring, you may find one visiting campus on KW Lake looking for a quick meal.
While many sandpipers nest in muddy and grassy grooves, solitary sandpipers utilize already built nests in bushes. These nests, often constructed by song birds such as robins, kingbirds, waxwings, and jays, are reused to raise another healthy family.
