We have many pretty species of duck in Michigan, but none compare to the vibrant color of the wood duck. With their array of purple and green feathers, bright pink bill, and striking red eyes, the wood ducks plumage is eye catching in even dense foliage. While females are a purplish brown, they have distinct white eyeliner and vibrant blue flight feathers, making them some of the most unique female ducks in Michigan.
Wood ducks get their name due to their nesting habits, finding trees with holes and notches that line the water and nesting in those. Due to habitat loss, nesting spaces like these have become scarce, so wood ducks regularly use homemade nesting boxes! We have two on campus near Kingswood Lake that have been used by this species in past years.
