Doves are a symbol of peace and love, and watching mourning doves has helped me understand why. Pairs will mate for life, gently preening each other to strengthen their bond, and it’s rare to find one without the other. When taking off, their wings make a high pitched whistling sound, and their calls are melancholy and peaceful.
While mourning doves are quite loving and affectionate birds, their nesting habits tend to be… negligent. You’ll often find a pair choosing to nest on a windowsill in Tremain, or a female that manages to find its way into a boys bathroom in the dorms. These spaces are exposed to the elements and heavy foot traffic, and nests are often destroyed before eggs are even laid.
