Introduced to Brooklyn, NY in 1851, the house sparrow has found its place in the top 5 most widespread wild birds in the world. Found on all continents except Antarctica, the house sparrow can be seen and heard most everywhere you travel, including on campus. While they're easy to overlook, their various brown patterning is detailed and intricate, and due to their prevalence, watching them is a wonderful way to start off a birding hobby.
Due to their large population size and prevalence, house sparrows have become the subject of many scientific studies on avian social structures and behavior. Over 500 articles covering these topics have been written on house sparrows alone.
