Rated in the top ten of smallest birds in Michigan, the brown creeper is incredibly difficult to spot due to their size, very quiet call, and camouflage. Starting at the base of a tree, the brown creeper will climb up looking for small insects in the bark. Due to their foot shape and specialized anatomy, it’s very difficult for them to climb down trees or climb backwards, meaning the only direction they can go is up! Once they reach the top of a tree, they fly to the base of the nearest next tree and repeat until they’ve gotten their meal.
Because of their tiny size, mating pairs will find a nesting spot and build their home with spider silk, insect cocoons, wood fibers, mosses, and lichen. If you listen closely, you may be able to identify their high pitched, quiet mating call in the canopy up above!
