When thinking about migrating insects, monarch butterflies are often the first to come to mind. Traveling over 3,000 miles south before winter, they will make the long journey back up to the US and Canada once the weather has warmed. The epitome of persistence and determination, monarchs symbolize the transition from the living to the dead and the resilience to continue moving forward, surviving their metamorphosis and miles long flight.
While monarchs brilliant colors are admired for their beauty, they are actually a warning sign for predators to not eat them! Monarchs are poisonous, meaning if ingested they can make various animals quite sick, and their toxins are sourced from the plant they eat as a caterpillar, the milkweed.
